The Story So Far
Initially the Titans recruited within the gay community, identifying a need for a social sporting group to begin and be developed within the LGBT community in Belfast. Once more people began to arrive, we realised that there was a need to develop the club and so established a committee to oversee the direction of the club, wrote a constitution that committed us to being open and inclusive to all and recruited a coach to develop our skills.
The club developed a training focus: the Bingham Cup and prior to Bingham, took part in friendly matches and tournaments with other teams in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and in the UK.
In the run up to the Bingham Cup, The Titans took part in a documentary called “A Queer Try” which followed our journey from a fledging club to partaking in one of the biggest rugby tournaments across the world (you’ll find more information on this in the Bingham Cup section).
During this year the club faced a number of different obstacles, from difficulties with funding, finding sponsors and a political backlash yet continued to push forward with their goals, to train and develop as a professional rugby club.
Our first season was a huge learning curve and was very much like being thrown into the lion’s den as most of our players had never picked up a rugby ball before coming to train or play with the Titans. This however, did not daunt us and we took each match as a challenge and an opportunity in which we could learn more about our individual skills, our collective skills whilst building a thirst and drive to take on the next team.
We have just started into our 09/10 season and you’ll find more information on our match fixtures in the fixtures section of the website including where these matches (both home and away) will take place as well as a breakdown of each match.
